| May Safety Message |
|
May – National Youth Traffic Safety Month
You make choices every day – what to wear, what to eat, what TV show to watch. So, why not make the choice every day to be safe behind the wheel, to protect your safety and the safety of others? May is National Youth Traffic Safety Month. So remember that buckling your seat belt only takes a couple of seconds and that text (LOL) message can totally wait. Choose to be a “good” statistic, choose to wear your seat belt, choose not to drive impaired and choose to always keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
To help you make wise choices behind the wheel you can visit the Just Drive PA website. It features a “Distracted Driving” page highlighting Pennsylvania’s new anti-texting law and the dangers of distracted driving. Also included is information on various highway safety topics including impaired driving, motorcycles, young drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians, child-passenger safety, and much, much, more. www.justdrivepa.org

What do the changes in the National School Lunch Program’s nutrition standards mean to you?
On Wednesday, January 25, 2012 new standards for the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs were introduced by the USDA as part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.
The Nutrition Group, your child’s cafeteria provider, has always strived to provide nutritious meals to your student We are pleased to reassure you that your child’s food service program already reflects many of the nutrition prlndples mandated In the new regulations.
You are probably wondering how these new standards will change your child’s school lunches.
Some of the changes you will see Include:
-
Larger portions of fruits and vegetables.
-
Students will be REQUIRED to take a fruit or vegetable with their reimbursable lunch. (In the past, your student could decline both the fruit and vegetable component of their meal if they wished)
-
Whole grain food choices will be increased.
-
Only fat-free and low-fat milk choices will be offered.
-
Calories will be limited based on age levels.
-
The amounts of saturated fat, nuts fat and sodium will be limited.
We are certain you will agree these are all positive changes to your child’s lunch program. Please feel free to contact your school’s food service director Kim Hunter if you have questions or for more information. |

Dave F. Brown, Ed. D., has written Why America’s Public Schools Are the Best Place for Kids to provide a research reality to the effectiveness of America’s public schools.
Negative perspectives from the press, politicians, and political action groups to use public dollars to support privatization of schools via vouchers or charter schools are unfounded.
The responsibility of meeting the needs of all learners, as public educators do, can-not be politicized. Americans must identify that the delivery of effective education is provided by the educational professionals who have for decades met the needs of a diverse population and succeeded on every front to improve the lives of U. S. citizens through the opportunities provided by a public education.
Education is a profession and a research-based field; a fact that is frequently ignored by those who disparage public schools. As members of the education profession, it is imperative that in an ever-increasing period of negative attacks on America’s schools, educators have the information that reveals public schools successes and purposely and publicly disseminate these facts. The stakes have never been greater for protecting public education.
If you’re searching for evidence that supports your local public schools and the educators who work there, Brown provides it in a clearly written format for all citizens to comprehend in his new book, Why America’s Public Schools Are the Best Place for Kids (available in all formats from http://www.rowmaneducation.com/

| Bellwood-Antis Digital Academy |
|
Choosing a quality cyber school for your child is critical to his or her future. At the Bellwood-Antis School District, we understand that the skills he or she builds during K-12 school years impacts career and college choices, earning power and success in life.
Selecting Bellwood-Antis Digital Academy (BADA) will ensure that your child is prepared for the demands of the real world while providing a quality educational experience in the environment of your choice. BADA is designed to meet the needs of students who are considering enrolling in a cyber school or who are already enrolled in a cyber school, but would prefer a more local, personalized option.
BADA offers a true blended learning environment that allows students to complete coursework in the privacy and comfort of home while still participating in school activities. Students have the option to take a course of interest on-site at Bellwood-Antis during the regular school day or attend the Career and Technology Center. BADA students can also participate in athletic teams, art and gym classes and other “extras.”
